HOUKOKU-JINJA (SENJOKAKU PAVILION)

HOKOKU JINJA SHRINE (SENJOKAKU PAVILION)

It seems there’s another HOKOKU JINJA in Japan and TOYOKUNI JINJA also has the same KANJI character too.

There are so many HOKOKU JINJA SHRINE in Japan. The name came from  “HOKOKU-DAIMYOJIN”  which is HIDEYOSHI TOYOTOMI’s Shingo(a title name given to a shinto name )

SENJOKAKU PAVILION is a moniler of HOKOKU JINJI, it literally meaning pavilion with one thousand Tatami mat space. However, it is actually  857 Tamami mat space. There are no Tatami mats and this name is sort of a metaphor.

Daikyo-Do is the original name of this building and changed its name in 1872, it was aimed as a Buddhist sutra chanting hall or to enclose one thousand Buddhist sutla.
