UNDERSTANDING HIROSHIMA

General information

location

Hiroshima prefecture is located in western part of mainland Japan. It’s facing Chugoku mountain area in north, Seto inland sea in south. Surrounded by beautiful nature and easy access in about an hour by car.

Population

hiroshima city 1.2 Million, total Hiroshima prefecture is 2.8 Million.

History

There was an Atomic Bomb dropped and hiroshima city was devastated in Aug 6, 1945. However, it has recovered and deverlopped now with continuous effort of people in hiroshima and global support. There are two UNESCO World heritage site, Itsukushima shrine and Atomic-Bomb Dome.

• Time Zone: UTC+9 (Japana Standard Time). Japan is one hour ahead of the Australia and Singapore.
• Language:  Japanese (Nihongo). Englisha isn’t widely spoken. However, most signs have English translations.
• Currency:   JPY  (Japanese Yen)1 USD ≒ 109 JPY (Aug.5, 2021)1 EURO≒ 130 JPY (Aug.5, 2021)

Best seasons of Hiroshima

Best season is April, October, and November.

• In April, you can see cheey blossums are blooming many places. (off course, many tourist places)
• In October, weather is much calm and tide difference is largest, you can enjou Itsukushima shrine and Torii gate the most.
• In November, you can go and see beautiful autum leaves at Mountain area and famous park at especially late November.

Season to avoid (my perspective)

• Golden Week: (End of April and 1st week of May). People back thier hometown, go travel. Highway and Tranportation gets huge Jam.
• Obon Holidays: (Week includes around Augst 13 to 15 )Almost same to Golden Week.
• Year end and New Year’s holidays: (Dec 30 to Jan 5). same with above two.
• September (middle and late) Possibly Typhoon hit Japan in September and tranportation stop for safety.(typically occurs recently)

WHERE TO STAY IN HIROSHIMA

There are  3 area options to stay when you came to Hiroshima.  

1. Hiroshima station  Easy access for transportaion       Recommend for family trip with large suitscase (Take taxi/ street car with suitscase ＆ family is tough)  

2. City Central       Easy access to Atomic Bomb Dome & Peace Memorial Park       Recommend for backpackers ( if you not travel with suitscase)  

3. Miyajima Island       You can enjoy sunrise and sunset       Consider Iwakuni airport if you take flight from Haneda to Hiroshima for more easy access. I recommend Hiroshima station area if you travel with large suitscase with more than  two person. If you are travel with large suitcase(approx. over 60 Litters), Japanese regular Taxi has not capable trankroom more than three large suitscase. Ofcourse you can take a streetcar to central Hiroshima with your suitscase, but I am not recommend it.
